Hello I'm Winnie Tang. Reading my friend Marie’s “letter to her teenage self” on her blog, got me thinking (out loud on FB) what would my middle-aged self tell my current self? This prompted an invitation from Marie, “do you want to write it (for the blog)?”
Can I imagine myself to be the mature and content 50 year old wise lady who got what she wished for when she was in her younger years and whilst now writing still with the mind-set of a fed-up, cynical, hurt and yet somewhat positive and full of love still youngish “lost in the city” hopeful?
However, on the day I was meant to sit down and write, I found out some upsetting news. How am I supposed to write as my joyful and wise middle age self when all I feel was hurt and anger RIGHT NOW?! So Marie literally guided me by texting me questions and helped me to process what just happened without actually knowing what happened. I then sat down and wrote. Whilst it was a very cathartic exercise, it was also more “woe is me”ing… than inspiring! However, Marie managed to pull out something which she termed “the buried treasure” (Trust that she can always dig for the good stuff!). It reminded me what the point is when the sh*t hits the fan! So next day I sat down, and I wrote again. So the ingredients of tears, soul searching and Marie’s coaching texts have baked a piece of cake made out (self-)love, compassion and faith.
A love letter from my middle-aged self to me
You have laughed and loved. Honour it. Let go of what was, make space in your heart and mind, give yourself the future you want and deserve by living in the moment.
Treat yourself with more kindness and compassion. The kindness, patience and compassion you show others, please give yourself the same and a dollop more!
Act out of love and compassion and not out of desperation. Know the difference and you will not be made to feel like a fool again.
All those bad eggs are just giving free lessons in how to recognise a good egg (Marie taught us all about "good eggs" :)) You are a good egg, so you're going to make a yummy omelette with another good egg! So if something smells off... Run!
Trust that your friends will always make you laugh out loud through your crocodile tears and tell you that you're beautiful even if you look a panda bear.
Remember to live your life story like your name sake. Be joyous and happy, never stop singing the poetry. And if your feel like it, write your own poetry, too!
I’m proud of you because you haven’t stopped living and laughing, you are doing your best to make each day a good one. And sometimes it’s ok to take a day off doing your best when you just don’t feel like it.
Enjoy each present moment because they are building the path to the person who's writing to you now. And she's greater and most loved by the people around her, more than you can imagine right now. Know you will be loved and respected. (We are making omelettes and pancakes every weekend!) And the best bit? She's still you. Plus a few more pounds. Maybe.
